Roseanne Gets Caught Up in Opioid Crisis

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/reliable-source/wp/2018/05/16/roseanne-gets-caught-up-in-the-opioid-crisis/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.2f3be3c4389f

To be clear, this is the fictional Roseanne, she isn’t actually addicted to pills. In the rebooting of the popular ABC series ‘Roseanne,’ the story line involves her taking Vicodin for her sore knee. She eventually becomes addicted, hides pills around the house, and takes them in secrecy.

Since its politically steeped premiere, ABC’s “Roseanne” reboot has been promising an upcoming opioid story line. As regular, everyday, Main Street-dwelling Americans, it made sense that the Conners would be touched by the prescription drug epidemic that’s dominating headlines. The only question was: Which member of the clan would be a statistic?”

What do you all think of this? We talked a lot about different ways that we should be talking about this as a community. Should our entertainment industry be utilized in sparking conversations about this crisis? Any other thoughts??

  1. The entertainment industry should definitely be using their platforms to increase awareness about this epidemic. I think if we look throughout history, anytime celebrities have stood up for a cause, there was definitely change made. Celebrities should just be making sure that whatever they do, they do it in a positive light and direct people towards the right resources.

    1. Agreed. With the right amount of comic relief, I think it would make families more comfortable talking about it while avoiding making it seem like a less serious issue. Roseanne can definitely use her platform to help.

  2. I think it is current and would be a believable issue. That said, Roseanne has been in the news recently for having unfavorable story lines, including suspecting neighbors, who happen to be Muslim, are building a bomb. They should avoid potentially controversial story lines for the time being, in my opinion.

  3. I think that on the one hand it is good that it's included in a popular show, but on the other hand I worry that precisely because it is in a fictional show, much of the audience is going to relegate the opioid issue to the domain of fiction. I hope that the scenarios they use are realistic and useful to destigmatizing addicts

  4. I would be interested to see how this would work in a TV show. Isn't Roseanne suppose to be a comedy? I hope that they would be able to incorporate the opioid crisis in the right way.

  5. I think that exposing this type of thing on TV would be good, however, the show must be careful on what kind of message they are sending with Rosanne's drug use. There are many things to consider since this show is a sitcom comedy. Is she abusing the pills for fun? Or is she addicted and trying to better herself using comedy to destigmatize the abuse. It's a risky topic to portray on a TV show like this, but then again I have not seen the show.
