I know I’ve already blogged for today, but this popped up on my phone this morning and I feel it’s something that definitely pertains to this class. Brett Favre, one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL, opened up today about his dependence on alcohol and painkillers. According to the article, he went to rehab 3 different times in his career, and once took 14 Vicodin pills at once (to put this into perspective, a month’s prescription of Vicodin is 30 pills).
This also reminded me of the Chris Heron story we watched in class. I think painkiller addiction is something that is much more prevalent in sports than we hear about, and is definitely swept under the rug in certain cases. What is everyone’s reaction to this?
I think this is crazy! Would have never thought that Brett Favre went through an addiction like this.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Brett. Having him once take a large dose of pills just goes to show the extremity of the addictiveness these painkillers are provoking.
DeleteI too agree that this is crazy. He is one of the greatest football players of all time. He had a long career, I wonder if more of his teammates also struggled with addiction. Sad that this happens.
DeleteI'm surprised that an athlete of his stature was able to keep this a secret up until now. I definitely think that there are a lot of professional athletes who are addicted to painkillers, especially because of the fact that marijuana as a pain manager is outlawed in most, if not all, major sports leagues.
ReplyDeleteThis shows how widespread the epidemic is. Any sign of pain and doctors prescribe opioids with the snap of a finger.
