Anti-Drug Video from the ‘50s

This is an anti-drug video from the 50s. I thought it was interesting. Responses could answer the following: What is your biggest takeaway? What audience do you think this video was trying to reach? If you watched something like this and knew nothing else about the issue, how would you view drug addicts? Who do you think was responsible for pushing videos/messages like this to the public?

  1. I think this video was trying to reach a Caucasian audience, probably parents, trying to scare them by showing them what terrible harm can come upon their children if they use Marijuana.

    1. I agree completely with this. The only time a person of color appeared in the video was when they were talking about drug addicts, and that they would commit crimes to get more drugs. I would say this video brings to light many of the racial motivations in starting the War on Drugs

  2. As most people have said, this is targeted at a very specific demographic, but it still has an overall effect publically and politically. Since these propaganda were spread back in the early 1900s, the U.S has been adamant about criminilization of marijuana. It's scary how the effects have lasted almost 80 years now.

  3. That video was kinda funny for how ridiculous certain things were. For example the part about breaking pop bottles and drinking the shattered class stood out to me. I believe this had to be a government film...the production quality for the time is good so if not them then a powerful company.

    1. Yeah this video was ridiculous. Looking back at it today, it seems like a comedy sketch on a TV show, when in fact it was propagandistic in vilifying marijuana users.
