The Possibilities of Medical Marijuana being able to combat the Opioid Crisis
As we discussed in prior weeks, medical marijuana can potentially be a large scale substitute for opioid prescription. This article examines Illinois potentially looking at the option of increasing medical marijuana in the state as a means for combating the opioid epidemic.
Do you think medical marijuana is a solution for minimizing opioid use? Do you think in the current political climate that government officials would legalize medical marijuana if it means reducing opioid deaths?

I think medical marijuana could aid in helping those seeking treatment for opioid addiction. I do not think it would be a quick fix, but something that could aid in treatment. I do not think government officials in many areas would legalize medical marijuana for purposes of reducing opioid deaths as many fail to recognize the opioid crisis and continue to blindly fight marijuana.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there still seems to be a crusade against marijuana by government officials, despite more than half of the states having some combination of legalized medical marijuana or recreational use. I think that the crisis is at a point where it is irresponsible to not exercise every option available.
DeleteI agree. It's ridiculous where there focus is sometimes.
DeleteAs is the common theme of this thread, I also agree with what Tyler has posted. The reasons for keeping marijuana illegal have become ludicrous and simply ridiculous. It clearly has medicinal purposes beyond the spectrum of helping treat addiction, and has been proven to be less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes, which are both currently legal
DeleteI think it could help in reducing opioid deaths, but as we discussed in previous blogs, we need to be careful about the time of Marijuana that is emerging. It seems that synthetic marijuana is doing more harm than good, so there needs to be a careful analysis of who should be able to produce and distribute it.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Guillermo. I wonder about the regulations that are in place behind producing synthetic marijuana.
DeleteSynthetic marijuana is becoming more and more dangerous. As people try to come up with stronger and stronger strains, the beneficial effects will start to be overpowered by the adverse effects
DeleteMarijuana can probably help alleviate the pain that patients are seek to reduce, but I don't think it is the only solution. It will take a combination of marijuana, therapy, support, and a handful of other things to help people reduce their addiction and back on the right track.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a better substitute, but not a solution. As we talked about earlier there may not be a solution for many addicts to kick their addiction, any they may end up still addicted their who lives. Marijuana would be a better substitute. The production also needs to be regulated to ensure the Marijuana will not become synthetic marijuana.
