UCSF's School of Medicine started the program of addiction training last year, partially in response to the growing need to treat opioid addiction in California and beyond. The program is designed to give doctors extensive training in addiction medicine at the beginning of their careers. It is part of a broader shift by medical schools around the country to adapt to the opioid crisis by better incorporating addiction medicine — historically a field within psychiatry — into overall medical training.

Do you think this program is helpful? Do you think such program should be implemented by other medical schools?
I think this is a helpful program. I think this program will help in the treatment of addiction and led to people getting the help they need. I do believe programs like this will start being implemented across the US in medical schools.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that this program would be helpful. Hopefully this could lead to a future generation of doctors that are aware of the issues with opioids and also know about alternative forms to pain management.
DeleteI think this program can definitely help. Adaptations in the medical field are needed to deal with this crisis. Hopefully this education will go as far as reducing the number of doctors and physicians who over prescribe addictive pain meds. At the same time, I hope doctors don't end up prescribing a ton of pills that are meant to combat addiction, and are instead taught that therapeutic methods are needed to compliment anti-addiction medicine.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Along with being educated on how addictive these opioids can be, I hope doctors are educated on a wide range of approaches to treating both pain and recovery from addiction.
DeleteI'm optimistic that with advancements in technology and increased knowledge on the subject that we as a nation will be able to move forward with coming out of this crisis. It will take some time yes, but intelligent people are implementing ideas to combat it. Doctors need to learn these therapeutic methods.
DeleteI think the program is something that should be used in all medical schools as it is important to properly educate those who will be prescribing opioids. This could ultimately lead to decreasing opioid addiction as doctors may be more reluctant to prescribe opioids in the future due to education.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Tyler. This program should be adopted by all medical schools.
DeleteAbsolutely this program will be extremely beneficial. The more that doctors are aware and educated on addiction, the more that they can make an impact in reducing the crisis.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great program and really necessary, but I'm concerned about whose leading it and how much training they've had in this field, or how much research they've done. Because it doesn't seem like anyone has really been an expert in the field or at least been knowledgeable about how to treat addicts before this program.
